How Ion Exchange Works

The water softening process relies on ion exchange. As hard water flows through the resin tank, calcium and magnesium ions (hardness minerals) are attracted to and exchanged with sodium ions on the resin beads. Once the resin beads are saturated with hardness minerals, the system undergoes a regeneration cycle using a brine (salt) solution from the brine tank.
